Lent: Day Twenty

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” -Matthew 26:36

“Sit Here”

Hours before Jesus’ climb up Calvary’s Hill, to die a criminal’s death for the sins of the world, Peter and the disciples promised to fight to the death for Jesus, to never abandon him, to pay any cost, do any task. What does Jesus ask of them?

“Sit Here”

Often, like the disciples, we can be excited to do something for Jesus. We beg to be used, to make a difference for the kingdom, to change the world. We become so convinced that God needs us, that somehow we are special and necessary, that we forget just how little we are and just how completely God is in control. Today, your mission is this: “Sit here.” Literally. Don’t get up. Stay in your chair. Turn off your phone, television, or music. Sit. Listen. Pray. Maybe you have fifteen minutes, maybe you have an hour.
