Hope’s Foundation

Written by Esther Nelson

"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” - Romans 5:1-2

Finally, the call from the Genetics Department came. I began sobbing as she told me there was no new diagnosis for my child. She waited, patiently yet bewildered, until I could communicate clearly again. Then she said, "I don’t understand. I haven’t had someone so upset over not getting a diagnosis before." My words squeaked out, "I just… hoped... for an answer; for help."

I hung up and headed to the shower. As I prayed and cried in disappointment, all I heard repeating in my mind was the song, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness." As verses one and two continued looping in my mind and on my lips, I realized I had misplaced my hope. I was devastated because my hope had been placed in doctors, tests, and answers instead of in Christ.

The Israelites wandered for years waiting for hope fulfilled in their promised land. The Jews waited hundreds of years to hear from God before Jesus was born. The early church waited for Christ’s return. Many died without seeing hope fulfilled in their time on earth. My hope is in Christ and His promise after death. No matter what hopes are fulfilled or left unfulfilled on earth, we are promised perfect eternity with all hope completed in Christ.

PRAYER: Lord, please keep our hope in You and eternity. Thank You for joy in the glimpses of eternity we see here on earth.
