The Savior’s Trustworthy Love
Written by Maddie Walberg
Each Christmas, it was my dad’s delight to decorate our country home. Imagine candles glowing warmly in the windows, tree lights glistening, and a spotlight illuminating the festive wreath hanging outside. Dad made Christmas lovely. Baby Jesus was lovely, too. But not this Christmas.
As a new believer, I realized for the first time that lovely baby Jesus would soon be tortured, suffering horrific crucifixion for my sin. This brought keen personal sorrow, but would teach me to submit to the trustworthiness of His proven love for years to come. Nothing or no one would ever prove their love for me like Christ did on His bloodied cross. It was there Jesus met my deepest need, and now His love must command my deepest trust.
Rehearsing His glorious gospel over and over again is absolutely imperative to guard my flesh from seeking to trust deceptive substitutes like the quest for understanding, control, certainty, personal fulfillment, approval, good health, and financial security, to name a few. These loves will always disappoint when trusted more than Jesus' love. The perfect love of Jesus promises to live His life through me by His indwelling Spirit. Each command and promise of Scripture is Christ’s declaration of love over me for my good and His honor. It is His power and grace that enables my obedience and trust. Baby Jesus becoming our crucified Savior accomplishes all of this for me and for you. His love demands our deepest trust.
