Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me. -Colossians 1:28-29
This summer, I had the opportunity to work my fifth year at Pine Lake Camps. This wasn’t what I wanted to do, but it was something that I felt God was clearly calling me to.
Before summer started I was filled with anxiety. Being torn between what my flesh desired, and what God was calling me to. It was unclear exactly what God had planned for me this summer. However, as the time for me to pack up and head down drew closer, God laid on my heart the reason I was going was to invest in the support staff team. This took shape in the form of morning Bible study and evening devotional/worship.
In order for me to go to camp this summer, I had to sacrifice a lot; my comfort, my emotions, and my energy, to name a few. I had to serve in a less than ideal environment and under less than ideal circumstances. One passage of scripture that kept coming back to me was Romans 12:1-2 (...present your life as a living sacrifice…). This became an anthem for me as I walked down the path God had laid out before me this summer.
Even though this summer was hard, I wouldn’t take it back for the world. Looking back now and recognizing the impact that God had on people through me is incredible. I can’t help but be in awe of how amazing God’s faithfulness is. Even when the road is rugged and you want to turn back, God is right there with you leading you through it.
Through this experience God has provided me with a fresh purpose and a constant reminder that surrendering to Him is absolutely necessary, and abundantly worth it. Having a posture of worship and obedience in the face of adversity was what got me through. It allowed me to reflect on and put into practice the words of Paul in Colossians 1:28-29.
As you reflect on the cross this Easter, remember we are called to surrender everything to Christ and follow after him in obedient worship.
