Lent: Day Thirty Two

Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. -Hebrews 12:1-2

Harvest time for me, like most people in our area, is a wonderful season and also very stressful. I am a combine and tractor tech. About 8 years ago during harvest, I was working on a tractor that was on a tight deadline. I had to split it between the engine and the transmission to fix a leak. In the process of putting it back, it would get to within about an inch of being together, but NOT ONE BIT FURTHER!

I fought it for hours, argh! I tossed the wrench I was using across the floor. I went out of the shop slammed the door and then prayed angrily, “God, what is going on?”

I calmed down eventually and fell on my knees and asked God for forgiveness and help. He brought this verse to me during that private time with him. The tractor did go together the next morning pretty easy. That wasn’t the main event though.

My goal was to get though the day getting everything accomplished. But God’s goal was to draw me closer to him that day, and that is what he does lovingly every day- refine me to be more like Jesus. You see, we can’t run the race with endurance without looking to Jesus!

So friends, when things are going smooth, going rough, whatever the season of life we need a Savior. We can’t save ourselves from eternal separation from him. Jesus endured the cross, and rose in the flesh on the third day from the grave, he took the wrath that was meant for me and you! He is alive in the flesh at the right hand of God He is the true author and perfecter that we can have complete faith in.

Prayer: Father, continue to draw us closer to you. Make us more like Jesus. Thank you for paying our penalty! Thank you for the perfect grace you give. Amen
