Lent: Day Fourty

He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. -Song of Solomon 2:4

Friends, may we not lose sight of the blazing center of what the Easter story is all about. This season moves us to reflect on sin, death, crucifixion, confession, repentance and more. This is certainly appropriate. But dear friends! Do you hear it?! A bold and resounding declaration thunders at the cross and tomb of our Lord. Step back and gaze upon the glorious whole! Behold the banner unfurling above! Our Risen King stands in triumph waving with joy his banner that unapologetically and emphatically declares, “I LOVE YOU!”

May we never cease to be amazed at the first six words of John 3:16—FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD!

Believe it. Rejoice in it. Let it compel you today to worship. Let the love of God free you today from guilt. Let his love propel you to love the world around you. Let the love of Christ soften your heart to love and trust him more!

MercyMe recorded a great version of the classic hymn, The Love of God. I encourage you to track it down today and give it a listen.

The Love of God (MercyMe)
The love of God is greater far Than tongue or pen can ever tell
It goes beyond the highest star And reaches to the lowest hell
The guilty pair, bowed down with care God gave His Son to win
His erring child He reconciled And pardoned from his sin

Could we with ink the ocean fill And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill And every man a scribe by trade
To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole Though stretched from sky to sky

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song
