Lasting Joy

Joy

Written by Jonathan Walberg

"…but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will be able to take your joy from you."

- John 16:22b

Earlier this fall, my son & I found ourselves enjoying a truly joy-filled afternoon. Backed by beautiful fall colors, and astride our mountain bikes, we found ourselves enjoying the thrill of world-class mountain biking in central Minnesota. Everett’s budding interest in the sport had gotten me back on a mountain bike, and my heart was overflowing with joy. Joy in experiencing something exciting, challenging, and beautiful– and experiencing it with my youngest son.

However, that joy was temporary. Partway through our ride, we came upon a lone rider lying face down in the middle of the trail. What followed was a blur: 911. CPR. EMTs. Defibrillator. Ambulance. Medivac helicopter.

When we rode away from the scene 40 minutes later, the feeling was surreal. We were enjoying the same experience on the same trail, but the joy I so acutely felt was replaced by the sadness of tragedy. I marveled at the fleeting joy of life.  Joy found in life does not last. But as we continued down the singletrack trail, another thought struck me. Find joy in the Life-Giver.

It is a grace from God that we find joy in our experiences. You will likely experience this joy as you gather with those you love this Christmas season. Relish it! Enjoy it! But may this temporary joy point us to the One who offers a joy that can never be taken away.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, thank You for offering true joy that can never be taken away. Grow in me a longing to see You. May I find my greatest joy in You. Amen.
