Good News
Written by Kirk Jefson
"And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.'“
- Luke 2:10-11
Many fond memories flood my mind as I reflect on past Christmas Eves. I would like to share a special one. It was a typical North Iowa Christmas Eve, snowy, some wind, with poor road conditions. I was aware of this firsthand having driven over five hours delivering my mail route. Our daughter was working at a Christian bookstore in Waterloo at the time. The store was very busy, so it was late when she finished work. We talked over the possibility of waiting until Christmas morning to travel, but we decided she would be fine if she was cautious and took it slow.
For her mother and me, it wasn’t fear but certainly concern and anxious thoughts and many prayers and glances toward the door awaiting her arrival. Just before lighting the candles for "Silent Night," in walks Jenny smiling as usual. Good news of great joy.
In a very small way, it was like the shepherds in the field keeping watch over the sheep. They were terrified at the angel’s announcement, but good news of great joy prevailed. This season you may experience uncertainty in different ways, but God continues to say, "Fear not for I am with you."
May God comfort, hold you close and give you peace and joy this Christmas season.
PRAYER: Father, would You remind us in our uncertainty, that joy is found in Your Son, Jesus.
